Malaysia 2027 will be staged across four host clusters

2026-09-05

Sarawak, Penang, Johor and Kuala Lumpur share the 34th SEA Games from 18 to 29 September 2027 — the first four-cluster model in Malaysian hosting history.

Malaysia will host the 34th SEA Games from 18 to 29 September 2027 across four clusters: Sarawak, Penang, Johor and Kuala Lumpur. The dates were confirmed after the organising committee meeting in Putrajaya, which also set an initial programme of 38 sports. The window was chosen for three practical reasons. University holidays begin around 18 September, so student volunteers and spectators can travel. The period sits before the northeast monsoon, which supports outdoor sport. It also falls after National Day on 31 August and Malaysia Day on 16 September, so the Games do not collide with those national celebrations. This is Malaysia’s seventh time as SEA Games host, after 1965, 1971, 1977, 1989, 2001 and 2017. For the first time the programme is spread across four clusters so existing venues can be used and the economic benefit is shared beyond a single city. The Olympic Council of Malaysia and the Malaysia SEA Games Organising Committee (MASOC) present the sports list to the Southeast Asian Games Federation. Appeals for sports not on the first list were opened after that submission. Spectators should treat cluster travel as part of the Games: opening night is in Sarawak, football lives in Johor, and the closing ceremony returns to Kuala Lumpur.
